Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon was at the Southside Senior Center in Springfield this afternoon to talk about Senior Sting, 2006.
Through the program, senior citizens voluntarily saved more than 8 thousand pieces of mail they suspected were fraudulent.
Thanks to those efforts, Nixon's office sent cease and desist orders to 76 organizations in the U-S and overseas that claimed senior citizens had won lottery prizes.
Nixon says the success of the do not call list has caused an increase in fraudulent direct mail.
Nixon is sending letters to 28 organizations suspected of promoting pyramid schemes.
The letters ask the companies to provide Nixon's office with more information about their organizations...Nixon says failure to comply could prompt an investigation.
One hundred and forty four organizations that billed themselves as charities in direct mail solicitations are also receiving letters from Nixon's office.
