Dickerson Park Zoo Gibbon Dies from Infection

A 12-year-old siamang at Dickerson Park Zoo has died.  Lucu died Friday from an acute bacterial infection that did not respond to treatment, according to a zoo statement.

He was one of two siamangs at the zoo.  His mate, Makali, is getting extra enrichment and interaction with her keepers in the Tropical Asia area.  A siamang pair will stay together for life.

The lifespan of a gibbon is 30 to 35 years in the wild and 40 to 50 years in captivity.
