Hunger Action Month Encourages Public to Help Others

September is Hunger Action Month, and Ozarks Food Harvest is stepping up efforts to encourage area residents to help fight hunger.  Special events are planned to raise awareness and give the community a chance to help out in the local effort to solve hunger.

According to Ozarks Food Harvest, USDA statistics show that 49 million Americans are food insecure, which means they may not know where their next meal will come from.  In the 28 counties served by the food bank, one in six adults and seniors struggle with food insecurity and one in four children may go to bed hungry.

Some events taking place this month:  Hunger Action Day is September 8th.  Hunger advocates are encouraged to wear orange—the symbolic color of hunger—and post their support on social media using the hashtag:  #HungerActionMonth and #HungerHeroes; Tea Bar & Bites’ Apron Fashion Show and Silent Auction will be held September 14; OFH at the Farmers Market of the Ozarks is September 17 and Panera Bread’s Empty Bowls event is September 23.

Food Bank staff have also created a 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar that gives one idea to help fight hunger for every day this month.
