Amendment 4 affects local funding and state oversight for Kansas City police. Supporters say "adequate funding is needed" to keep this big-city community safe, but the mayor of Kansas City since 2019, Quinton Lucas, opposes the proposed amendment because it "takes power" from local officials. Democrat Jeremy Dean is running unopposed in the August 6 Primary Election. Republicans Stephanos Freeman and Bernadean McAfee are competing for the chance to represent their party in November's election. There is no incumbent in this district. Current representative for the 132nd, Democrat Crystal Quade, has reached her term limit. KSMU reached out to McAfee who declined to be interviewed.
