The director of the Missouri Department of Conservation is stepping down from the position effective July 15.

Robert Ziehmer has been with MDC for over 25 years, the last six and a half years as director. In a statement, Ziehmer says he’ll be continuing his conservation career through a new endeavor in the private sector.

During his tenure, he oversaw restoration activities for elk, prairie chickens, hellbenders and sturgeon; plus implementation of major infrastructure projects, including hatchery renovations, wetland renovations, and new regional facilities.

Ziehmer is the 8th person to serve as MDC director since the agency’s founding in 1937.
