Studying Volcanoes: Both cool and hot

Gary Michelfelder
Looking over the Altiplano plateau from the summit of Volcan Uturuncu in southwest Bolivia.

Gary Michelfelder is fascinated by volcanoes. While in the army, he had the need to sit on the tops of volcanic remnants, and became interested enough in them to major in geology after beginning his university studies.

Since coming to the Department of Geography, Geology and Planning at Missouri State University, he has combined both his teaching and research efforts to learn more about these dangerous and important geological systems.

Listen in as Gary discusses types of volcanoes, both extinct and active.  He also details the tools needed to gain and interpret the data which can inform our knowledge of the nature of the volcanic system and likelihood of an eruption.
