MDC Releases Spring Turkey Hunting Numbers
Missouri's Spring Turkey Season numbers are in.
Hunters killed 43,273 turkeys during Missouri's regular spring turkey season, which ran April 21st through May 11th. That's 1000 more than were taken during last year's spring season. Texas County had the highest harvest with 938 birds checked.
According to the Missouri Conservation Department, there were seven firearms-related spring turkey hunting incidents. Two were fatal. Five of the seven incidents, including one of the fatalities, involved shooters who mistook other hunters for turkeys.
Missouri's safest spring turkey season was last year when the Conservation Department recorded only one incident, which was nonfatal. The worst was 1986 with 31 reported incidents and two fatalities.
The department says those incidents demonstrate the importance of hunter education in preventing hunter injuries and fatalities.
