No MOre Trash Bash!

http://ozarkspub.vo.llnwd.net/o37/KSMU/audio/mp3/nomoretras_455.mp3

An effort is underway this month to reduce the amount of trash in Missouri's streams and along its roadways. Michele Skalicky reports.

We've all seen the signs. "This roadway adopted by such and such group." But most of us have probably never stopped to think how important the MO Adopt a Highway program and its volunteers are in keeping the state's roadways clean.

An effort this month by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the MO Department of Conservation is designed to raise awareness of the need to reduce the amount of litter along roadways and in Missouri streams.

No MOre Trash Bash! activities are focused on litter pickup (several pickups are planned) along with reminders to people to properly dispose of their trash.

MODOT spokesman Bob Edwards says Adopt A Highway volunteers play a big role in keeping the state's roadways clean.

Edwards says they realize they can repeat the anti-littering message until they're blue in the face and it might not have a significant effect since it comes down to personal responsibility.

During the No MOre Trash Bash! in April 2006, thousands of MODOT Adopt A Highway volunteers collected thousands of bags of litter.

The Conservation Department is involved, too, and is holding Stream Team cleanups and tree plantings.
