The annualChili Supper and Silent Auction to benefit the Central High School Kilties will be held Friday night (2/1) from 6 to 8 at Central High School, 423 E. Central in Springfield.  The cost is $7 for all you can eat chili, hot dogs and tea.  The cost for kids 10 and younger is $5. 

The Missouri State Ice Bears will host Oklahoma Friday and Saturday night (2/1 & 2/2) at 7 at Jordan Valley Ice Park, 635 E. Trafficway in Springfield. 

The First Friday Art Walk is Friday night (2/1) from 6 to 10 at 22 downtown Springfield venues. 

Springfield Art Museum will host Pre-K Project Days Friday morning (2/1) at 10:30 for kids three to five-years-old.  The cost is $5 per child.  The classes include a storytime and a hands-on arts project.  Registration is required. 

An opening reception for the traveling exhibit, “Telling a People’s Story:  African American Children’s Illustrated Literature,” will be held Friday night (2/1) from 7 to 8:30 at the Library Center in Springfield.  It will feature music by Pipkin Middle School choirs and Turning Point Church as well as poetry readings.

The Christian County Homeless Alliance will host the Hot Soup, Cold Nights Fundraiser Friday night (2/1) at 6 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 460 W. Aldersgate Dr. in Nixa.   Proceeds will help provide emergency shelter for local families experiencing homelessness. 

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board Chess Club will host the All-Levels Chess Tournament Friday night (2/1) from 6 to 9 at the Park Central Branch Library on Park Central Square in Springfield. 

The 7th annual Beer, Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Festival is Friday and Saturday (2/1-2/2) at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds’ E-Plex. 

A Class Act Productions present the “First Friday Variety Show” Friday night (2/1) at 7:30at The Groove, 401 N. Boonville.  There’s a $5 cover. 

Dr. David Johnson, with the Missouri State University Political Science Department, will discuss how Geographic Information Systems have become an integral part of the field of public safety and emergency management.  Theseminarwill start Friday (2/1) at 2:30 p.m. in Temple Hall Room 345. 

Springfield Little Theatre presents “Cabaret” through Sunday (1/3) at Nathan P. Murphy’s, 218 S. Campbell in Springfield. 

Actors Theatre of Missouri presents “Miss Julie” at the Springfield Art Museum Friday and Saturday night (2/1-2/2) at 7:30 and Sunday (2/3) at 3.  Admission is free, but donations are accepted. 

Skinny Improv will look at the silly side of love during the“Grab Bag Variety Show” Friday night (2/1) at 7:30 at 308 South Ave. in Springfield.  Admission is $10.

The 2019 MSU Jazz Festival Finale Concert will feature will feature guest artist, Will Campbell on saxophone, Saturday (2/2) at 5 p.m. at Wehr Band Hall.  The MSU Jazz Festival will feature student groups throughout the day. 

The Springfield Art Museum, 1111 E. Brookside Dr., will host a Family Day Saturday (2/2) from 10 a.m. to noon. It will feature hands-on gallery activities and art making.  Family Days are designed to allow kids and grown-ups to explore the museum together.

A member of the Greater Ozarks Audubon Society will give tips for identifying birds and attracting them to your yard during the program,“Citizen Science: Great Backyard Bird Count,” Saturday (2/2) at 2 at the Library Station in Springfield.  The program is designed to prepare adults to take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count in February. 

The Missouri Conservation Department will host the Bluebird Basics Workshop, part of the Discover Nature Families series, Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Walter Woods Conservation Area, 7129 Dutch Elm Dr. in Joplin.  Registration is required. 

Naturalists from Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center will host a guided hike to look for short-eared owls Saturday (2/2) at 4 p.m. at the Shawnee Trail Conservation Area in Mindenmines. 

Learn how to identify raptors during the program, “Birds: Raptor Identification,” Saturday (2/2) at 2 p.m. at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 4601 S. Nature Center Way.  No registration is required. 

Prairie State Park, 128 NW 150th Lane in Mindenmines, MO, will host a Bison Hike Saturday (2/2) at 1 p.m.  Learn about bison during a two-mile guided hike.  Registration is required. 

The program, “African American Trailblazers,” will start Saturday and Sunday (2/2-2/3) at 1 at George Washington Carver National Monument, 5646 Carver Rd., in Diamond, MO. 

The Police vs. Fire Charity Ice Hockey Game, to benefit the Greene County 100 Club, will be held Saturday (2/2) at 4:45 p.m. at Jordan Valley Ice Park.  The organization provides financial support to the surviving spouse and dependent children of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty in Greene County.  General admission tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. 

ASeed Swap will be held Saturday (2/2) from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Christian County Library Ozark Branch, 1005 N. 4th Ave.  Take seeds of any type to swap with other gardeners.

The Mid-Town Concert Series at Central Christian Church, 1475 N. Washington in Springfield, will continue with the Candace L. French Memorial Piano Concert Sunday afternoon (2/3) at 3.  It will feature Gregory Worthley, a junior piano performance major at Evangel. 

Bright Star Touring Theatre will present“African Folktales” Sunday afternoon (2/3) at 1:30 for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade at the Library Center. 

“Cocoa and Chords” will be held Sunday (2/3) at 2 at the Library Station for adults.  It will feature live music by Jason Loftin. 

Michele Skalicky has worked at KSMU since the station occupied the old white house at National and Grand. She enjoys working on both the announcing side and in news and has been the recipient of statewide and national awards for news reporting. She likes to tell stories that make a difference. Michele enjoys outdoor activities, including hiking, camping and leisurely kayaking.
