Starting in November, students in grades K-8 who attend Springfield Public Schools will go to class in person four days a week. Since the school year started, some students have gone to school on Monday and Tuesday and some have gone on Thursday and Friday. High school students will continue to go in person only two days a week.
According to SPS in a statement, Wednesday will remain a virtual learning day so that schools can be cleaned.
The new schedule will go into effect for grades K through two on November 2 and for grades three through eight on November 9. District officials said the phased-in adjustment will pave the way for a return to a regular five-day school week at the start of the second semester in January. There will be no change for students enrolled in the Virtual Learning Option.
Health and safety protocols will remain in place, including requiring face coverings, frequent hand washing and increased cleaning of facilities, according to the district. SPS officials said the district will expand its contact tracing team, provide new options to help with physical distancing and hire additional substitute teachers.
