Social Media Claim Of Ballot Tampering Is Investigated By Greene County Clerk

Michele Skalicky

The Greene County Clerk's Office is investigating a claim on social media made by someone in another state.  According to Greene County clerk, Shane Schoeller, someone claimed Wednesday that they had illegally disposed of a number of absentee ballots in Greene County during the five-day period of absentee ballot preparation that’s allowed by state law.

Schoeller said in a news release that they have not been able to validate the claim, but they are taking it seriously and have begun an internal investigation.  His office is working with the Greene County Information Services Department to report the matter to the federal Election Infrastructure—Information Sharing Analysis Center.  And he said the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office has referred the matter to federal authorities.

Schoeller said his office takes the right to vote “very seriously” and they will always strive to ensure that ballots “are received, handled and tabulated with bi-partisan professionalism.”

According to Schoeller, the absentee ballot preparation process is transparent and observed at all times by bipartisan teams as well as by his staff.  He said there are “numerous checks in place to make sure that all ballots are handled with the highest possible integrity.”
