Potholes Ruining Your Commute? You Can Report Them

State Farm

Area roadways have become a lot bumpier following the recent snow and sleet.

Potholes form when temperatures warm up during the day but drop back down at night.  According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, moisture from rain and snow constantly seeps into the cracks and joints of the roadway.  When temperatures drop at night, that water freezes and expands the pavement, which causes it to crack and bulge.  The pressure caused by vehicles driving on it results in chunks of pavement popping out and causing potholes.

MODOT wants to know if you see a pothole so crews can repair it.  To report one, call 1-888-ASK-MODOT or submit it online at modot.org—click on “Report a Road Concern” or email comments@modot.mo.org.

The city of Springfield also has a linkon its website to report potholes.
