New Book Sings the Breakup Blues

Breakups: Everybody has been through one, or multiple ones, and each split is a little different. Michael Czyzniejewski, an assistant professor of creative writing at Missouri State University, recently wrote “I Will Love You For the Rest of My Life: Breakup Stories.”

This book is a collection of 29 short stories he wrote about all types of breakups. From one night stands, to long-term and long-distance relationships, the book explores the intricacies of detaching from a significant other who you once had hope for. Like the title, Czyzniejewski wrote the book with a nod and wink and a little bit of humor.

The cover art for the book is a glimpse in a bathroom, with only one pink towel on a towel rack, and a toilet paper roll. He says it really speaks of the comfort that people achieve together, and the bathroom is a domestic comfort zone.

As he’s grown as a writer, he says he’s noticed that he writes domestically – paying attention in large part to how people live their home life and interact on a personal level

Czyzniejewski hopes that through his characters’ experiences, readers can gain a different perspective and rethink how things can happen in their own lives. Although the stories don’t have happy endings, or beginnings really, he say he wanted his readers to experience a range of emotions while reading.

Nicki received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from Missouri State in marketing, in 2002 and 2004 respectively. After gaining experience in writing, marketing, special event planning, fundraising and public relations, she returned to the university to work in the office of strategic communication. There she tells the university’s story by sharing the stories of individuals at Missouri State.
