Right now, seniors can change their Medicare health care plans;  the open enrollment period to make those changes runs through December 7th.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services encourages people on Medicare to look at their options for the next year’s plan, which begins on January 1st.

Julie Brookhart works in the Kansas City Regional Office of CMS. She says for people with Medicare plans, looking at other options for a better deal is crucial.

“We say it is crucial because every year, if you do look at the options for the next year, a lot of times you’re going to find a plan that is better for the next year than the one you’re in for your needs. Because your needs can change throughout the year, and so can the plans,” Brookhart told KSMU.

Open Enrollment lasts through December 7th. After that, seniors can’t change their plans until the following October. To look over plan options, you can meet with a representative from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program by calling 800-390-3330. You can also enroll in a new plan online at medicare.gov.
