Joplin is soliciting applications for the city council position left vacant by Mike Woolston, who announced last week he was resigning from his post amid conflict of interest allegations.
Woolston, who served as mayor during the 2011 tornado, came to an agreement with the city absolving him of any wrongdoing. He had faced alleged ethical violations that he used his position and inside knowledge of city redevelopment plans to broker property following the tornado, which the councilman had consistently denied.
Woolston agreed to resign from the City Council in order to minimize any further turmoil to the Joplin community, according to a statement. The Joplin City Council voted to accept his resignation at the September 21 council meeting.
Candidates for the Council General Seat should be a qualified voter of the city of Joplin and have been a Joplin resident for at least the immediate past four years.
Applications for the vacant seat are being accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The city asks individuals to download the application online and bring it to the City Clerk's office at 602 S. Main Street before the deadline in order to be considered.
