August Special Election Set to Replace Former Sheriff Joey Kyle

christiancountymo.gov

The Christian County Commission has approved the date of a special election to replace Joey Kyle, who resigned Wednesday from his post as sheriff before pleading guilty to embezzlement and fraud.

Commissioners voted 3-0 Thursday to set the date for August 4. See the notice for countywide special election.

Kyle, who had served as sheriff since 2009, will spend one year and one day in prison without parole, per a plea agreement reached with the office of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

In addition, Kyle must pay $50,290 in restitution to Christian County and forfeit a money judgment of $71,640 to the government, which officials say represents the proceeds he received from his criminal conduct.

Christian County Coroner Brad Cole is serving as acting sheriff. In the meantime, the commission is taking applications for an interim sheriff, which are due by 9 a.m. next Thursday, May 28.

Here’s the public notice regarding the interim post:

The Christian County Commission will be taking applications for an interim Sheriff.  Applications must be submitted in writing to the office of the Commission, 100 W. Church Street Room 100, Ozark, MO, 65721, no later than 9:00 a.m. Thursday May 28, 2015.    Applicants must possess the following qualifications:  Must be a resident taxpayer and voter of Christian County, shall have resided in the county for more than one year and must hold a valid peace officer license through the Missouri Department of Public Safety. No person shall be eligible for the office of the Sheriff who has been convicted of a felony.
