Local Republicans Bittersweet About Election Results

Local Republicans waited in anticipation at the Oasis Convention Center Tuesday night as a mixed slate of election results were announced throughout the night. KSMU’s Kristian Kriner was there and reports.

Greene County Republicans cheered as the poll results were announced for local Republican candidates.

Even though John McCain lost the presidential race along with Republican candidate for Governor, Kenny Hulshof, some local candidates celebrated winning their races.

Eric Burlison won his race for State Representative of the 136th District.

He says his election has been like a roller coaster.

“I had no idea coming into tonight how we would do, but I am very pleased and very proud to have the vote and support. And I’ll be even more proud to support the district I grew up in,” Burlison said.

Another Republican winners chalking upvictories were Greene County Assessor Rick Kessinger and Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott.

Silence filled the convention center as McCain gave his last speech after Obama was named the next president.

Some stood in disbelief and some cried, but Republican Sharlet Osterkamp had one word to describe the results.

“Sad. You knew it was going to be close. You know, you knew underneath that it was going to be a hard drive probably, but I wasn’t going to give up until I had to,” Osterkamp said.

Osterkamp says she is excited for the local Republicans that won and she will support Obama as her new president.
