Voters rejected a proposal Tuesday to raise the state's cigarette tax to fund healthcare for low income Missourians. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Voters rejected a proposal Tuesday to raise the state's cigarette tax to fund healthcare for low income Missourians.

Ron Leone is the executive director of the Missouri Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, a group that strongly opposed the tax hike.

But supporters of the tax had hoped it would provide more funding for Medicaid and other healthcare expenses while also discouraging people from smoking.

A written statement from the tax supporters, a group called Committee for a Healthy Future blamed Big Tobacco for the amendment's defeat.
