Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt is Missouri's next govenror. He defeated Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill be fewer than four percentage points. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

SEVERAL HUNDRED MATT BLUNT SUPPORTERS GATHERED AT UNIVERSITY PLAZA HOTEL IN SPRINGFIELD ELECTION NIGHT TO WATCH THE RESULTS COME IN.

BY 2 A-M WHEN BLUNT GAVE HIS ACCEPTANCE SPEECH, ONLY ABOUT 200 SUPPORTERS REMAINED...DESPITE THE LATE HOUR, THEY CHEERED ON THEIR CANDIDATE.

THEN, WITH HIS WIFE MELANIE BY HIS SIDE, BLUNT SPOKE TO THE CROWD.

IN ST LOUIS, DEMOCRAT CLAIRE MC-CASKILL GAVE HER CONCESSION SPEECH TO SUPPORTERS WHO GATHERED AT THE RENAISSANCE HOTEL.

MC-CASKILL BEAT THE INCUMBENT, BOB HOLDEN IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY IN AUGUST AFTER A HARD-FOUGHT CONTEST.

AT THAT TIME, LONG-TIME POLITICAL OBSERVER AND S-M-S PROFESSOR DON STANTON TOLD K-S-M-U THESE TYPES OF INTENSE PRIMARY BATTLES DON'T BODE WELL FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT FACTORS HELPED MATT BLUNT WIN THE ELECTION, MANY REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS SAY THEY'RE DELIGHTED TO WORK WITH A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR.

SPRINGFIELD REPRESENTATIVE AND ASSISTANT MAJORITY FLOOR LEADER MARK WRIGHT SAYS UNDER DEMOCRAT BOB HOLDEN, THE REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED LEGISLATURE SAW MANY PRIORITY BILLS VETOED.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE BRAD ROARK OF GREENE COUNTY AGREES.

HE SAYS REPUBLICANS WILL HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT THEMSELVES IF THINGS DON'T GO WELL.

AND HE SAYS WHILE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE EVERYONE, HE EXPECTS REPUBLICANS TO MAKE MOST MISSOURIANS HAPPY.

SUPPORTERS OF DEMOCRAT CLAIRE MC-CASKILL LIKE STEVE REED SAY SHE WOULD'VE MADE THE STATE BETTER HAD SHE BEEN ELECTED GOVERNOR.

MC-CASKILL STILL HAS A JOB IN STATE GOVERNMENT...SHE TOLD HER SUPPORTERS IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS WEDNESDAY THAT SHE'LL CONTINUE HER WORK AS STATE AUDITOR.

AS FOR OTHER STATEWIDE OFFICES...REPUBLICAN PETER KINDER NARROWLY WON THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S RACE AND REPUBLICAN SARA STEELMAN WILL BE THE NEXT STATE TREASURER. DEMOCRAT ROBIN CARNAHAN WON THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S RACE AND DEMOCRAT JAY NIXON KEPT HIS JOB AS ATTORNEY GENERAL.
