Voters Approve Gay Marriage Ban

Missouri voters overwhelmingly supported adding a ban on gay marriage to the state constitution. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

MISSOURI LAW ALREADY PROHIBITS SAME SEX MARRIAGE BUT SOME LEGISLATORS FEARED THAT WASN'T ENOUGH.

CITING A HIGH COURT RULING IN MASSACHUSETTS THAT OVERTURNED A SIMILAR STATE LAW THERE, LAWMAKERS DECIDED TO PUT A CONSTITUTIONAL BAN ON THE BALLOT.

AND, THE ELECTION RESULTS WERE CLEAR...VICKY HARTZLER IS A SPOKESWOMAN WITH THE COALITION TO PROTECT MARRIAGE, THE GROUP CAMPAIGNING FOR THE BAN.

THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION WERE DISAPPOINTING FOR OPPONENTS OF THE BAN.

DON DRESSEL WORKED AS THE SOUTHWEST MISSOURI FIELD DIRECTOR FOR THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE BAN.

HE SAYS HE BELIEVES MANY PEOPLE VOTED FOR THE BAN OUT OF FEAR.

DESPITE THE FACT THAT MISSOURIANS VOTED OVERWHELMINGLY IN FAVOR OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL BAN ON GAY MARRIAGE, DRESSEL SAYS THE GAY AND LESBIAN COMMUNITY IS UNPHASED.

SUPPORTERS OF THE GAY MARRIAGE BAN SAY THEY DON'T WANT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST GAYS AND LESBIANS.

VICKY HARTZLER SAYS IT'S SIMPLY A MATTER OF MAKING SURE MISSOURI'S LAW BANNING SAME SEX MARRIAGES WITHSTANDS A COURT CHALLENGE.

MISSOURI IS THE FIRST STATE IN THE NATION TO PASS A BAN SINCE GAY MARRIAGE BECAME LEGAL IN MASSACHUSETTS EARLIER THIS YEAR.
