Springfield Police To Begin Issuing Citations To Those Who Blatantly Violate Crosswalk Laws

Michele Skalicky

Springfield police officers will begin issuing citations for blatant driver and pedestrian crosswalk violations this week during Yield Check events.  The citations will be handed out starting Wednesday, June 30, the day the weekly Yield Check will take place at Sunset and Grant.

Yield Checks are funded through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation. The goal is to make Springfield more pedestrian friendly by making drivers aware that they should yield to people at crosswalks.

According to city officials, the checks have been conducted at nine locations so far, and there’s been an average driver yield rate of 46 percent.  Up to now, police officers have been pulling over violators and issuing educational warnings.
