Missouri Paper Owners Resign In Protest Over Racist Cartoon

KSMU - Ozarks Public Radio

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The co-owners of a family-owned Missouri newspaper have resigned after the publication of a racist syndicated cartoon.

The cartoon published in Wednesday's Washington Missourian shows a masked black man grabbing a white woman's purse. She asks for someone to call 911 but the man says, “Good luck with that lady ... we defunded the police.”

The cartoon was published as some protesters call to defund departments over the death of George Floyd and other black Americans killed by law enforcement. The publisher who ran the cartoon is also the co-owners' father.

He apologized in a column for what he called poor judgment and says the cartoon was meant to show opposition to the defunding movement.
