Results Of The November 5 Greene County Special Election

Michele Skalicky

During a special election Tuesday, Springfield voters approved two city sales tax renewals supporting the police-fire pension fund and transportation needs.

The pension tax renewal received 78% voter approval, and the transportation tax renewal received 80% voter support. The police-fire pension sales tax is on a five-year renewal cycle, but will end when the fund reaches 100%. The transportation sales tax has a 20-year sunset.

Springfield Mayor Ken McClure thanked voters after the results were announced.  He said the renewal of the police-fire pension fund tax “continues to honor the commitment that the community has made to our law enforcement officers and firefighters.” And the transportation sales tax will allow the city to continue to meet critical transportation needs.

A tax levy increase proposal in the Walnut Grove School District failed at the polls Tuesday.  Unofficial results from the Greene County Clerk show 54 percent of voters said no to the increase, which would have been used for several projects in the district.
