The Springfield-Branson National Airport may have some major changes coming its way after a nine-member task force recommended the airport move from being part of the municipal government to a standalone regional airport authority.

Brian Weiler, the airport’s Director of Aviation, says the transition could require a change to the City Charter and a review by an implementation team, according to a press release by the City of Springfield.

The task force also said the airport should create a committee to look into the transition.

A specific timeline for the transition was not yet recommended.

The task force was made up of representatives appointed by City Council and it was formed at the request of the airport’s board of directors.

According to a release from the city, the task force felt a change could help the airport by letting it streamline decisions, be more entrepreneurial, and have greater flexibility to respond to a quickly changing aviation industry.
