IMAGES: Homeless Awareness Advocates March on Square

Advocates, citizens and homeless gathered on Sunday morning to march in downtown Springfield to bring awareness for homelessness in the community.

Every night about 711 people in Springfield are homeless, according to Springfield's 2013 Point in Time Homeless Count data. Of the 711 people, 350 are single adults; 50 are veterans; 425 are families and 163 are children.

Bon Tindle, one of the organizers of the event, says the march was in frustration and reaction to what they call a lack of effort from the city regarding homeless shelters and other support services. She notes there is an appreciation for what the city does in terms homeless prevention, but there is still more that needs done.

The city has partnered with the Springfield Police Department and the Community Partnership of the Ozarks' One Door, a non-profit working to prevent and end homelessness in Greene and Webster County through coordination of services.

Tindle says the march's goal to raise awareness and support will extend beyond Sunday's efforts.
