A portion of highway near the Springfield-Branson National Airport has been re-named the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Mile.” KSMU’s Jennifer Moore reports.

Friday morning, state and community leaders unveiled a new sign dedicating the roadway to the late civil rights leader. The dedicated roadway is on State Highway 266 in Greene County.

The Springfield chapter of the NAACP raised the $2,200 needed for the signs. Drury University and two anonymous donors helped contribute to that total. Francine Pratt is the president of the local chapter of the NAACP. “It shows how inviting and how welcoming we are. And I think it also shows and represents the diversity we have here in Springfield. And it just shows that when people come into Springfield, it lets them know that they’re welcome,” Pratt said.Missouri State Senator Bob Dixon began the effort to re-name the highway about three years ago.

For KSMU News, I’m Jennifer Moore.
