The Springfield Art Museum Adds New Wing

The City of Springfield and the Springfield Art Museum held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon for the new west wing addition. The projected completion date is scheduled for late spring or early summer 2008. KSMU's Joe Morgan has more.

The new art museum wing will include a new library, gift shop, restrooms, reception area, a small object display area, and three new galleries. The Director of the Springfield Art Museum, Jerry Berger says this addition has been in the planning stages for almost fifteen years. He says that raising money to fund the construction was not an easy task.

Berger says the new wing was financed mostly by private donations. He says that the names of the galleries will commemorate the special gifts given by some people.

Berger says the new galleries will be equipped with modern technology that will help maintain and preserve the artwork on display.

Berger says the new addition is another step towards a long term goal that the museum has had for many years.

The gallery will be open during its normal hours throughout the construction. Berger says there will be a few less parking spaces. For KSMU News, I'm Joe Morgan.
