CoxHealth Hopes Program Will Encourage People to Shed Pounds

In the past, CoxHealth Fitness Centers has offered the Just Lose It weight loss challenge program twice a year for three years but at a cost of $15 for anyone not a member.  But the upcoming Just Lose It challenge is free.  Ashly Stelling is member services manager at the Meyer Center…

"This year we wanted to try something that would hopefully help more of the community be able to be involved because of the obesity epidemic that's kind of hitting the nation."

A recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Missouri is among a dozen states with obesity rates of at least 30 percent.  The CDC says 30.3 percent of Missourians are obese.

Participants in the ten-week Just Lose It weight loss challenge will have access to nutrition challenges, cooking demonstrations, weekly motivation, education via e-mail and more.

They’ll also be able to take part in an eight-week series of walks on Saturday mornings with the option of doing a 5K at the end.

Stelling hopes for more participation during this challenge from people all over the Ozarks.  And she would like to see changes made during the program become permanent…

"We'd like to just educate on the importance of living a healthier lifestyle and maybe making some healthier choices on a day to day basis.  You don't have to go on a strict diet.  You don't have to completely change your lifestyle but just, by choosing to make some better choices here and there, you're going to make  a big difference for yourself in the long run."

Stelling says those who have been successful in past Just Lose It programs say the motivation and accountability were what helped them lose weight.

Everyone who checks in at all three weigh-ins will receive a participation prize.  The overall male and female winners will receive a six-month membership and a $50 gift card to CoxHealth Fitness Centers.

The Just Lose It challenge will kick off August 30thfrom 6 to 8 pm at the CoxHealth Meyer Fitness Center, 3545 S. National.  That night, participants can register, talk to CoxHealth health and wellness professionals and complete their initial weigh-in.
