Rain first and then snow...that’s what the National Weather Service is predicting for the Springfield area.Jerry Claycomb is meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Springfield...
"For today and most of the day tomorrow, it looks like we'll stay with some warm south winds, so the precip we're going to get here the next 36 hours or so is going to be all rain, some heavy at times."
But things will change tomorrow night. That’s when the weather is expected to turn wintery...
"We've got a pretty strong low pressure system that's down in the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle now. It's going to continue to develop and move our way. That's what's giving us the warm south winds now. As the low goes through, it looks like tomorrow afternoon, late afternoon, there's going to be a lot of cold air behind the low pressure system, and temperatures are going to fall quite rapidly."
Claycomb says we could see one to five inches of snow in the Springfield area with heavier amounts near the Missouri/Kansas border.Temperatures will be in the teens tomorrow night thru Christmas morning with strong winds making it feel even colder.A flash flood watch is in effect thru tomorrow afternoon for much of Southern and Central Missouri and Northern Arkansas.
A winter storm watch is in effect tomorrow afternoon thru Friday afternoon for Springfield and areas to the west and north as well as Northwest Arkansas.
