Recently, several nonprofit organizations in Springfield were awarded grants that might make access to healthcare easier for those living in the Ozarks. KSMU’s Chasity Mayes has more.

The Missouri Foundation for Health is the largest non-governmental foundation in Missouri focused on providing financial aid to community health activities in the state. Grants given by the foundation help support nonprofit organizations, that are placing emphasis on increased access to primary care, health literacy, and organizational effectiveness.

Grants were given to nonprofits all over the state including seven in the Springfield area which totaled $706,384.

Julie Johnson, Communications and Media Specialist for the Missouri Foundation for Health says there is an application process in order to be considered for a grant.

The Missouri Foundation for Health primarily focuses on providing healthcare to those who are uninsured or underinsured. Advocates for a Healthy Community, The Kitchen, and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department primarily serve citizens in the Springfield area that are considered low income and lack health coverage. Each organization listed benefited from recent grants given by the foundation, and plans to improve access to healthcare and health literacy programs in the Ozarks are already underway.
