Gas prices keep rising but Southwest Missouri is taking action. The Ozarks New Energy Conference kicked off today in Springfield. Organizers say the conference is a way to educate many people and organizations about using alternative fuels, saving energy and going green. KSMU's Jana Greer was there and reports.

Displays could be seen throughout the Gillioz Theatre today showcasing different ways people can help save energy and use alternative fuels. Organizations such as the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, Empire District Electric and Ozark Greenways are just a few of the many vendors that were at the conference. Richard Herman says he came to the event to learn more about alternative energy sources.

The conference was planned as the result of a successful public meeting about new fuels that was held last summer. Jennifer Ailor is the event coordinator. She says people are ready to explore new fuels and to become energy independent.

Congressman Roy Blunt was one of the speakers at the conference. He says it's important for Missourians to embrace different energy sources.

The conference will continue until Saturday afternoon. For more information about the conference or new fuels you can use the link at KSMU.org.
