Tips For Those Most Susceptible to Heat Illness, and Where The Cooling Centers Are

For older adults, adjusting to sudden temperature changes may be difficult and could become a health issue during the summer.

Heath stroke or heat exhaustion is more likely to impact those over the age of 65.

“One of the things, I guess, that happens with the elderly is that they don’t realize how dehydrated they may be getting,” says Debbie Morrissey, community support specialist for the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging.

Morrissey says some elderly individuals do not consume enough water or may attempt to go outside during the hottest times of the day, which causes major dehydration.

She encourages drinking plenty of water, take cool showers or baths, wear lightweight clothing, and to not engage in vigorous activities.

Morrissey adds that both its north side and south side senior centers have cooling centers for seniors during the summer. The south side center is located at 2215 S Fremont Ave from 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. The north side senior center is located at 301 E. Talmage from 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

“Several places will stay open or having places set up. Salvation Army has places set up,” Morrissey adds.

The Salvation Army’s cooling center at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway is open until 7 pm Wednesday and will be available from 9 am to 7 pm Thursday. Morrissey says citizens need to be aware of any heat illness symptoms and when to seek help.

“You know if your temperature goes up and if you are feeling dizzy and faint, those are signs to watch for as to whether you need to see a doctor of not,” Morrissey says.

Other symptoms include headaches, weakness, nausea or vomiting, as well as fast pulse. If you experience any of these signs, you’re advised to seek medical assistance immediately.

Morrissey adds the best things to do on hot days is to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and avoid going outside during the hottest time of day.
