Peter Herschend Reappointed to State Board of Education

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt reappointed Peter Herschend to the State School Board this morning at a press conference at Republic Kindergarten. KSMU's Emily Nash was at the announcement and files this report.

Govenor Matt Blunt appointed Peter Herschend to his third term to the State Board of Education.

Herschend says during his next eight year term, he will encourage the board to emphasize early childhood education and try to get more funding for the eMINTS program.

The eMINTS is a training program for teachers that integrates technology and researched based strategies.

Herschend says the State Board of Education is most effective when it work at a policy level.

Preschool programs are under the State Board of Education's responsibilities.

Herschend says the board is discussing what constitutes an effective preschool program.

He says the kindergarten program went through a similar process sixteen years ago.

Herschend was first appointed to the Missouri State Board of Education in 1991.

Currently he is president of the State Board and is also a board member for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce.
