Springfield Celebrates 100 Years of African American Community at Monday March

The Springfield NAACP is hoping to see roughly 500 participants or more at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. march downtown.

The public is invited to attend, beginning Monday morning at 9:30.

Cheryl Clay, chapter president, believes that the march and performances are particularly significant given the milestone reached this year.

“We are marking a hundred years of black life, history and culture in our community,” Clay said.

Touching on the theme, “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture,” participants will hear performances about the African American community by “Big Mommas Back Porch Theatre Troupe” and a Missouri State University poetry group, “Untamed Tongues.”

“Normally our attendance ranges from 400 to 700, and we are hoping for good participation from the community this year since the weather will be nice.”

There will be coffee and pastries available for participants.

The march will begin at Mediacom Ice Park and end at the Gillioz Theater. A map of the march route is available below:
