Chocolate and flowers is one way to win over your significant other for Valentine’s Day. But love can take a little more work. KSMU’s Anna Thomas sat down with a couple that has been married for nearly five decades to learn their secret.

Jackie Mynatt: “My name is Jackie Mynatt, and we’ve been married for 49 years,”

Voisy Mynatt: “Almost 50 [laughs]. And I’m Voisy, her husband,”

The Mynatt’s met back in high school, but didn’t start dating until Voisy went on leave from the military.

“We had a few dates, not very many, when he asked me to marry him. I said, you’ll have to ask my mother,” Jackie Mynatt said.

Now, nearly 50 years later, the two are revealing their secret to a long-lasting love.

Voisy Mynatt: “Well, you’ve got to compromise here and there.”

Jackie Mynatt: “And you have to work together.”

And for special occasions, like Friday, Voisy has a good piece of advice for his fellow men.

“You cannot go through a Valentine’s day, or a birthday, or Christmas without a card,” Voisy Mynatt said.

But to the Mynatts, it all comes down to…

Voisy Mynatt: “The love we have for each other. I think that is the most, that’s the most important. And you treat each other as equals; you can’t boss one another, really.”

The Mynatts say they are looking forward to their 50th wedding anniversary in June.

For KSMU News, I’m Anna Thomas.
