New Mobile Library Begins Routes in Greene County
Many Springfield residents have trouble getting to a traditional library branch, but the Springfield-Greene County’s brand new Mobile Library is now making it possible for customers to gain access to their favorite books, DVDs, and CDs. KSMU’s Justin Lux went along for a ride with the library and has the details.
After replacing the 20-year-old bookmobile, the new Mobile Library has quickly become a favorite in the community.
“I couldn’t believe it, I mean you can come out here and it’s like you’re going to the library. It’s just convenient.”
Camille Robinson is a fairly new customer, but says she was immediately blown away by their service.
“You can pretty much get whatever you want off of there or if it’s something special you want, they’ll get it for ya,” she says.
Sheri Casada, one of the library employees operating the Mobile Library, says it’s that kind of personal service that makes their operation so special.
“A lot of times the same customers come and you kind of get a feel for them on different days. What they like and that sort of thing, but we just try to keep a good variety of just all different sorts of things for everybody,” says Casada .
After the previous bookmobile broke down, the Friends of the Library provided a $225,000 grant for a brand new Mobile Library. The new, 32-foot-long library on wheels is able to hold up to 3,000 items and is expected to serve around 18,000 customers this year alone.
The Mobile Library goes all over Greene County and Casada says the feedback has been great.
“Very, very positive comments. Everybody loves it, it’s so bright and clean. They feel like they have more space inside,” she says.
The new Mobile Library allows people to do many of the same things you could do at a library branch, like register to vote or apply for a library card.
