Show-Me Heroes Employment Program for Veterans Expands

Governor Jay Nixon signed a bill Monday that expands the benefits of the Show-Me Heroes program--that's an employment program for military veterans.  KSMU's Matthew Barnes reports.

According to a release from the governor’s office, the original Show-Me Heroes bill in 2010 helped military veterans returning from overseas, and their spouses, find good jobs here in Missouri.

With this new expansion, Missouri will offer a training program for veterans. Employers will receive a 50 percent wage compensation for that program during the training period.

The state is also expanding eligibility for financial assistance to spouses of service members for things like overdue bills, transportation and day care costs while pursing employment.

According to the governor's office, about 2,000 businesses in Missouri have   taken part in the "Show Me Heroes" program, and they've hired over 1,600 veterans.
