If your child dreams of holding snakes, planting a beautiful garden or having class outside now is their chance. Springfield Public Schools are offering a new Ozarks wildlife school for 5th Graders interested in nature.
KSMU's Kristian Kriner reports.
The Springfield School District in collaboration with Wonders of Wildlife and Bass Pro created the Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility, or WOLF, for certain 5th grade students to learn more about nature.
Students currently in 4th grade who are interested in nature are encouraged to apply for the program for the next school year.
Through a random lottery system, the Administration will chose 25 boys and 25 girls among the applicants to attend the school at the Wonders of Wildlife Educational Center.
Two teachers will teach students the same core curriculum as other 5th graders, but all of the subjects will be connected to nature and conservation.
Students will spend most of their time outdoors, experiencing all types of weather and exploring nature in Springfield.
Chuck Stockton, Assistant to the Superintendent, says this new school is a great opportunity for students to learn in a new setting.
"We want to provide them with an opportunity to learn and apply that learning in a different setting as with all students. We want them to achieve as high as they possibly can and we want to provide them every opportunity to do that in a way that best meets their needs," Stockton said.
Fourth grade students wanting to apply for the Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility must have good attendance and behavior this past school year.
For an application or more information call 523-0117 or visit our website at ksmu.org.
Applications must be received by April 4th at 5 p.m.
