The summer heat has not stopped members of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society from taking to the square with their Freeze Mob event designed to create awareness about Multiple Sclerosis, also known as MS. KSMU’s Matthew Barnes reports.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society estimates about 400,000 Americans are living with MS. According to Ashley Mayer, Development Manager for the National MS Society, MS affects the body’s central nervous system with varying results.

“MS is a very interesting disease it affects everybody very differently. Symptoms can range from numbness to loss of sight, loss of use of their limbs. It affects the nervous system, there is no true cause,” said Mayer.

Participants of the Freeze Mob event will wear orange and freeze their bodies in several places around the Park Central Square for three minutes. Mayer says they will be holding information cards about their upcoming Bike MS event.

“Bike MS is a two day bike ride that clients supports, avid biker rides, people of all walks of life participate in and it all raises money for the National MS Society. Starting in clever overnighting in Joplin and returning back to clever. This week is specific for promoting our event and getting our teams excited,” said Mayer.

The Freeze Mob event will take place at noon June 21st at Park Central Square. There will be several more Freeze Mobs across the Midwest including, Wichita Kansas, Omaha Nebraska and Kansas City Missouri.  For more information visit KSMU.org. For KSMU News, I’m Matthew Barnes.
