The annual Movies at Founders Park event is once again coming to the park located at Water Street and North Jefferson in Springfield. This summer’s line-up boasts many new releases, along with some classics. KSMU’s Justin Lux went out to Founders Park and has the details.
I’m currently standing inside the 250-seat amphitheater at Founders Park where the movie nights will be held. Shows will run from July 8 until August 27 and will feature “Family Nights” on Fridays and “Date Nights” on Saturdays for a more mature audience. As Bob Nelson, a spokesman for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, explains, the event is really one of a kind.“It’s a great way to enjoy some of today’s newly released films. We also do have a couple of classics that will show. This year we have West Side Story and Meet Me in St. Louis, a really unique way to get out and enjoy a nice evening in downtown Springfield with the whole family,” Nelson says.A few of the more recently released movies that will be shown include Shrek Forever After, The Social Network, Toy Story 3 and Inception. In all, there will be sixteen films shown over the several weeks that the event is being held.The park board will also be partnering up once again with the Springfield and The Ozarks (SATO) 48 film challenge to highlight local filmmakers. The SATO 48 is made up of teams competing to create a short 5-minute film over the course of a weekend. Thirteen of these films will be shown before several of the movies at Founders Park. The park board's Bob Nelson says it's an opportunity to show off some of the talent in this area.“It’s a really great way for us to showcase the local filmmakers here in the Springfield and the Ozarks. We really do have a great pool of talent here in the Ozarks when it comes to filmmaking,” he explains.Free family four packs of tickets are available each week at the Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers, Mediacom Ice Park, the Busch Municipal Building and Mediacom Offices. Admission without the ticket packs is $5 per person and children 5 years of age and under are free.For KSMU News, I’m Justin Lux.
