For many, going to work is only fun if you get paid. That’s not the case for Springfield’s new resource coordinator for homeless services. The new volunteer is gaining a lot of responsibility with none of the financial benefits. KSMU’s Chasity Mayes reports.
Romona Baker was hired by the Council of Churches of the Ozarks to help support area churches as they look to meet the needs of Springfield’s homeless population.
As the new resource coordinator for homeless services, Baker says she will be a source of communication between several organizations.
“The task force on homeless have asked the Council of Churches of the Ozarks to take over some responsibility in providing communication between Springfield area churches and the organizations that are serving the homeless,” Baker said.
Baker, who has been volunteering for over 10 years, will try to help build relationships between local organizations that are currently involved in helping the poor. She’ll also be talking to church leaders to identify their wishes and resources to serve the homeless, as well as serving those that are vulnerable in the Ozarks.
Those involved with homeless services say there are many ways to help. Donations of time and money are both in need.
Springfield’s largest homeless shelter, the Missouri Hotel, has 90 rooms and is very close to capacity.
