There are many definitions of a hero in American society. Some say super powers, a catch phrase, and tights will do the job. But for a new coffee shop in Springfield, the definition of a hero goes deeper than what a comic book might tell you. KSMU’s Adam Hammons has more on how Heroes Coffee, which is having its grand opening Friday, is partnering with community service organizations around Springfield.
This new corporation will be based in Springfield with the goal of partnering with its “heroes,” which are community service organizations across the nation and the world. Tim Ferguson, the co-owner of the Heroes Coffee Café, explains.
“The Heroes Coffee concept is really based on identifying our personal heroes as a company. Companies or, actually, organizations or people around the world, nationally, or locally who are doing a great job of helping others.”
The company is a for-profit organization with staff members who want to point out some of the organizations and people they admire in the world. For Springfield they chose two groups to partner with: Convoy of Hope and the Care to Learn Foundation. Ferguson explains how they will be helping them and future heroes.
“We talk with whatever person in that organization is that works with businesses and things and we’ll just sit down and ask, how can we help you?”
Ferguson said they will be doing a variety of things including coordinating volunteers, funding, and just spreading awareness.
The company is also partnered with a Mexico based organization called Lamp International Ministries which does humanitarian work in Mexico.
Ferguson said he would eventually like to have cafes all over the U.S. Each of these cafes would be owned by the Heroes Coffee corporation and would have their own “heroes” in the community.
“It’s more of coming alongside them and see them be a success. To see people aware of what they do. You know if it’s here in the café, to see people talking about it, to see people getting organized around it, to see just things lift.”
Heroes Coffee Café is already open for business and is located on the corner of National and Chestnut.
