Nixon Visits Afghanistan, To Return Wednesday

Governor Jay Nixon is in Germany after spending four days in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, visiting U.S. troops stationed there. KSMU’s Matt Evans has more.

Governor Nixon, along with the governors of four other states, landed in the mountainous Afghan village of Bagram after making stops in Iraq and Kuwait. While there, he visited with troops serving in the Missouri National Guard. Scott Holste is a spokesman for the governor’s office.

“Governor Nixon is wrapping up a trip that took him and several other governors to Iraq and to Afghanistan to visit with troops there. The Governor has arrived in the air base in Landstuhl Germany. He and the other governors are visiting the military hospital there,” said Holste.

Missouri currently has two National Guard units serving in Iraq and one if Afghanistan.

“This was a great way for Governor Nixon and the other governors to show their support as Commanders in Chief of their National Guard units,” said Holste.

Six more Missouri National Guard units are scheduled to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan later this year.

Nixon and the other governors were invited to take part in this trip by the U.S. Department of Defense.

For KSMU News, I’m Matt Evans.
