Trout Season Kicks Off Sunday
Shortly before the sun rises this Sunday, fishermen and women across Missouri will be waiting for a siren to mark the beginning of trout season. KSMU’s Nathan McVay has more.
At 6:30 am on Sunday, three state parks across Missouri will open up their waters for trout fishing.
Trout season begins the first day of March every year. Sue Holst is the Information Officer for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. She says the opening day of trout season is great for the parks and for the people.
“Whenever it is on Saturday or Sunday we traditional have a larger crowd then if it were on a weekday. So we expect a big crowd,” she said.
With worries of the struggling economy and rising unemployment rates, Holst says fishing and camping is a smart, cost efficient way to escape the stress.
“While we know the economy effects everyone we do feel like this is a very effective way, and a very efficient and a very economical way to have a good time,” she said.
I’m walking through the aisles of the Bass Pro Shops in a very crowded fishing section. With multi colored boxes filled with bait and long reels that all look the same, a lot of things look unfamiliar, but a certain trout enthusiast tried to explain
“Alright well this is spinning tackle..."
As Mountain Home, Arkansas resident Michael Taylor talks about all of the different equipment options, one can’t help but notice the passion he has for trout fishing. Taylor has been trout fishing for 45 years and he says he’ll be fishing on Sunday morning because there is no place better.
“I’ve fished everywhere, but I have never, I’ve never had the fun that I have had in this region. This is just awesome,” he said.
Taylor says that the beginning of trout season is the best cure for economic fears.
“Well it is an escape, I mean, it is a tension reliever for me. Everyone has stress in their life, but I go to the river, and I fish,” he said.
The three state parks are Roaring River, Bennett Spring and Montauk State Parks. For KSMU news, I’m Nathan McVay.
