"Food Fight" Grocery Sale to Benefit Hungry

Two groups aiming to benefit the hungry are hosting a truckload grocery sale this weekend, offering discounted food items to the public. KSMU’s Jamie Givens reports.

The Kitchen and Monark Baptist Church in Neosho are putting on their first “Food Fight” truckload sale of 2009. The event will take place Saturday, January 10, at the Lady Baltimore Warehouse in Springfield from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Kippie Kutz is a spokesperson for The Kitchen.

“This event is basically open to the community, to the public, to come out and purchase staples, things that you need in your refrigerator or your cabinet. It’s not a full grocery store line of products. It’s just a few items that have been discounted to us, so that we can go to the community and actually offer a savings on food,” Kutz said.

Among the food items offered at discounted rates are packaged ham, natural cheeses, cereals, produce and desserts.

All of the money raised from this event will be split evenly between The Kitchen and Monark Baptist Church.

This will be the second truckload sale hosted by these organizations. In November, Kutz says more than 300 hundred people took advantage of the sale, and she’s hoping for more than 500 people on Saturday.

She says The Kitchen is hoping to make this a monthly event.

“Hopefully, this will allow our community to be able to purchase other items at the grocery stores locally, and it won’t, hopefully, drain the income for that particular family,” said Kutz.

Sampling and pre-orders will be available at the warehouse on Thursday, January 8, from 11 to two. During this time, the public can sample some of the items that will be offered at the sale, as well as place orders for what they would like.

Only cash and credit cards will be accepted.
