Elderly People Need to Drink More Fluids

Almost every day, consumers are bombarded with offers to help them get healthy, and stay trim. One local expert says people often aren’t aware that a person’s diet should change as they age. KSMU’s Jamie Givens reports.

The average adult should consume between 1800 and 2,000 calories per day. However, this number is slightly lower for the elderly.

Natalie Allen is a registered dietician and dietetics instructor at Missouri State University.

Allen says the biggest problem with elderly people is that they aren’t drinking enough fluids.

Elderly people should also focus on getting an adequate amount of fiber in their diets, while avoiding foods with a lot of sugar.
