The homeless shelter in West Plains is the only one in a one hundred mile radius. The Samaritan Outreach shelter is in need of repairs and is at full capacity. People in the community are trying to get a new shelter built. KSMU's Jana Greer has more.
One resident of the shelter is mother of two named Anne. She didn't want to give her last name and has been homeless for over a year.
It's the only homeless shelter in the West Plains area. Vickie Elmore is the Director of the Samaritan Outreach Center. She says they've had to turn people away and need more space.
But a new building is on its way, thanks to the donation of one man. Dick Davidson is the Owner of Howell Creek Property Company in West Plains. He says he was aware of the need and was happy to help.
The Samaritan Outreach Center has its land, but is now trying to raise money for a new building. The center will have a variety of fundraisers to try to raise about one-hundred-fifty-thousand dollars. The first fundraiser is a rummage and bake sale. If you would like to help, the center is asking for donations and is inviting everyone to come and shop. The rummage and bake sale will be April 4th and 5th from 8-5pm at the Samaritan Outreach Center in West Plains.
