Winter weather has pounded parts of the Ozarks. KSMU's Missy Shelton has an update from a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.
Shelton: Across the Ozarks, there are areas that are covered in heavy snow while other portions of Southwest Missouri barely got a dusting. I spoke today with Jason Schaumann, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield about the weather system that's moving through the Ozarks.
Schaumann: Over the last 6-12 hours, we saw a band develop across southeast Kansas, northeast Oklahoma and shift into the Missouri Ozarks. This wasn't really a solid band of snow. As it pushed into the Interstate 44 corridor, there were some areas that picked up several inches of snow. Here at the airport we got almost 7 inches but if you go to your neighbors maybe 10 or 15 miles away and they hardly got anything. Northwestern Greene County, for instance just got a trace of snow while Springfield had that 7 inches. Quite a bit of variability. The storm system really started winding up when we got to late morning here to where there's a much larger area of moderate to heavy snow that's developed across south central Missouri. We've gotten reports across south central Missouri of snow fall rates of 1-2 inches per hour. This would include West Plains, back up to ward Houston and Texas County, even Rolla is getting moderate to heavy snow.
Shelton: Forecasters expect the snow to diminish throughout the day and end by sunset.
