Meteorologists Say March Brings Mix of Weather

Meteorologists say March can bring a mixed bag of weather: snow, ice, tornados. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

We've had up to 7-8 inches of snow in the Springfield area. Earlier today, I spoke with Jason Schaumann with the National Weather Service in Springfield. He says this kind of snow isn't unusual for March.

Schaumann: March can be a variable month in the Ozarks: snow, ice, can all happen here. The Springfield metro area is below normal for snowfall for this time of year. We're actually playing catch-up here.

Shelton: Schaumann says March is hit or miss when it comes to snow.

Schaumann: March typically is a boom or bust when it comes to snowfall. Some of our biggest snowfalls have happened in March. The Gulf of Mexico really opens up.

Shelton: Forecasters are thinking about other kinds of severe weather in March...most notably the approach of tornado season. National Weather Service meteorologists are conducting storm spotter training in counties across the Ozarks this month.
