Stretch of Republic Road to Close

Road work will close part of Republic Rd. this week. KSMU's Michele Skalicky reports on what you can expect.

Those who use the Glenstone/Route 60/Republic Rd. interchange know that it can often become congested.

A project that gets underway this week is designed to ease some of the traffic problems there. A stretch of Republic Rd. in that area is set to close by tomorrow morning. Bob Edwards is a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Transportation.

"Steps are going to be taken overnight to block the access to Republic Rd. just east of the YMCA and just west of old Glenstone. By Tuesday morning when folks are getting up and getting ready to go to work or wherever, that section of Republic Rd. will be closed as will the access to Republic Rd. on Boulder and Harvard."

The 5.2 million dollar project is a joint effort of MODOT, the City of Springfield and Greene County. Edwards says the interchange will see some major changes.

"We'll be eliminating a southbound left turn to go east on Route 60 and instead we are going to build a loop ramp that will bring the southbound to eastbound traffic around and under the bridge. There will be a new intersection built on Republic Rd., and that will involve bending the eastbound 60 offramp to Republic Rd. Republic Rd. will be raised and widened to 5 lanes, and that new intersection will have a signal. The whole idea is to improve the traffic flow along Republic Rd. and S. Glenstone."

There will be no access at all to the stretch of Republic Rd. between Glenstone Avenue and Charleston. You may have to find new ways to access businesses near that area.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall. For more information, go to
